The new Mercedes ML is a proper 4x4 crossover, but then it had to be. The previous model ML was never the car it could have been, so when Mercedes designed the new ML, it had a lot of issues to address before it could become a great car. Luckily, when there is a real challenge to be had Mercedes are good at coming through. The new ML is such a good car, its as good as any of its competition on road, but also with the rarity of being very well accomplished off road too (although real off road competence does require some extras from the options list).

Eternally the new Merc ML looks much better. This is of course only personal opinion, but you try and find someone who doesn't agree. It really does look great with a much more rounded feel and a nose that is achingly good looking for a 4x4.

Internally the improvements have really come a long way. All the materials used are not just of a high quality, but of the kind of quality you would expect in Mercedes of old. It feels like Mercedes have tried to see if they really can still produce an exceptional car with this new ML. There are little touches like brushed aluminum on the air vents that really set it apart. There is of course seating for 5 adults and plenty of room for their luggage.

Standard kit of all ML model variants is great, with everything you would expect and more. Leather does require you move up to the SE spec, and the off-road pack is a cost option on all models.

The handling and performance has been improved with the rest of the new Mercedes ML. With the use of a new chassis the handling is now much more responsive and the ride smooth on even our UK roads. With a range of superb engines from a 272bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol to the blistering 503bhp AMG version, plus an assortment of petrol and diesel engines in between the biggest problem is deciding which one suits your tastes best.

In conclusion, the ML is now the car it always should have been... a great one.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

For the first time ever, Range Rover decided to add a second car to its line-up. With the company’s reputation at stake, the Range Rover Sport had to be good. If fact it had to be better than good, it had to be incredible. The good news is, it is.

The Range Rover Sport is a smaller squatter version of its big brother, the Range Rover, with its meaner more aggressive styling and big wheels hiding nothing of its intention. There are four engines available. Starting with the slightly more eco friendly 188bhp 2.7- and 268bhp 3.6-litre turbodiesels, but if you want performance that really lives up to the ‘Sport’ badge then you have to choose either of the 295bhp 4.4-litre V8 or 4.2-litre V8 supercharged 385bhp petrol engines.

Regardless of which engine you opt for, the Range Rover Sport won’t disappoint. Based on an upgraded Discovery platform it has been designed to handle like a smaller car whilst retaining the comfort and off road capabilities you would expect from a Range Rover.

Land Rover Freelander

The Freelander is the 4x4 for those who want to have a 4x4, but without the associated problems. It’s massively capable off road, easy to park, reasonably economical and drivable around town. Plus in the Freelander, you can still be a friend of the earth.

The previous Freelander was the best selling 4x4 in the UK because it ticked so many of the boxes. It did have some issues though, like poor handling, a lack of space, and some reliability issues. Land Rover have now really got their act together and built a car worthy of sitting in the same stable as the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover. The new Freelander is now the car it always wanted to be.

Reliability looks set to be rock solid in the new Land Rover Freelander, not just due to Discovery parts being used in the cabin, but due to a new range of engines. There will be a six-cylinder 3.2-litre unit with 230bhp and a more economical 158bhp 2.2-litre diesel. An automatic gearbox is optional.

The handling has also been improved as it is now more composed on road. The suspension smoothes out bumps well, body roll is kept to a minimum and the car feels more composed all round. Off road the Land Rover Freelander can still call its self a real 4x4 though.

Ford Fiesta

The new Ford Fiesta is the big little car. With a new classy, spacious interior, and lots of features only found in larger cars, it really is at the top of its game. But then, in the small car market, if Ford wants you to choose the Fiesta then it has to be great.
